Selecting The Right Engine Oil For Your Car

Engine oil serves as a crucial part that complements the function of an engine. If you have just bought your car, there are certain things you will have to learn. To maintain your car effectively, you must know which oil is best for your car. However, before that, you must know some technical details about the engine oil to make it easy to make your choice better. That includes:

Functions of Engine Oil

As we all know, engines have many moving parts. Therefore, these parts frequently come in contact with each other. The engine oil provides lubrication to ease the friction and delay the wear and tear of the engine over time.

Another role of it is to prevent corrosion. Due to fuel combustion happening inside the engine, it produces chemicals that can cause damage to metals inside. Engine oil prevents that from happening. However, over time the oil oxides and does not remain effective. This corruption is the reason that you should change the engine lubricants regularly.

In addition, the engine oil also helps to cool down, clean, and seal different engine parts. It is not possible to do this task manually by opening the whole engine. Here lubricants provide a great helping hand.

Advantages of Regular Oil Change

Some of the advantages of regular oil change include:

Engine life improves:

The engine remains intact for longer due to less friction and accumulation of dirt.

Provides better mileage:

Yes, engine oil has a great influence on fuel mileage. Less energy is lost in friction, and the engine performs more efficiently.

Aids the environment:

When engine oil gets old, it gets in between combustion, and the car releases toxic gas. That, in turn, pollutes the environment.

Cools the engine:

When the car parts slide over each other. They produce heat. If the temperature goes high, it can seize the engine. The oil prevents that because it prevents friction.

Better driving experience:

The engine feels lighter and works more efficiently. This performance is because there is no dirt, friction, or corrosion in the way of the engine.

Grading Numbers of Engine Oil

Before grading the engine oil, you should know what the numbers and alphabets represent in a grade. There are two numbers: one is before an alphabet, and one is after. The alphabet is W which represents winter. The number before W is the weight of oil in winter. On the other hand, the other number represents the weight of oil under warm conditions. The numbers range from 0W-20 to 10W-40. It gets thicker up the range.

Apart from that, there are also engine oils that are specialized for only one weather.

You should check in the car manual which grade of oil will be best for your car. Else, you can also make a decision based on your weather conditions.

When to Change the Oil?

There is no hard and fast rule on when to change the lubricant. It depends on the type of oil and the type of engine. However, it is recommended to change it after 3000 miles or three months. Whichever comes first.

With the technology improving day by day, nowadays there are oils which last for about six months. It can go longer than that if your engine can take full-synthetic oil.
